The products of conception seen here represent a first trimester spontaneous abortion at 8 weeks gestation. Note the gestational sac containing an embryo. A significant number of fetal losses occur early in gestation, and many go unnoticed. The most common cause for such loss is a chromosomal abnormality, including those not often seen in livebirths, such as monosomies and trisomies.
